McKenna Flanagan

Writer and artist with a passion for interactive narrative design in games. Looking to translate experience from game design education and narrative design focus into the industry. Quick to learn and passionate about working in tandem with team members to design games with greater scope and meaning. Eager to work with others on small or large projects.

What I Do

Narrative Design

As my primary focus in game design, writing compelling narratives for interactive media is my greatest passion. The narrative of a game can affect all of its other facets, from art direction to game mechanics; and, most importantly, it affects the player.

Art Direction

I began practicing digital art in my second year of college after realizing how effective it was as a form of communication. Even when the in-game art would be delegated to more experienced artists, being able to cross the barrier between narrative concepts and art direction produced better results. I continue to both use art as communication as well as improve my art through practice.

Project Leadership

I have a natural inclination to direct and manage communication in group projects. I enjoy having a hand in everything in order to be aware of any problems or roadblocks in a project, and what needs to be changed or communicated to fix them. Taking a larger role in order to make a project proceed as smooth as possible is always a fulfilling experience.

Presentation

Charismatic and confident, I am always eager to share what I'm passionate about to a room full of people. From presenting personal projects to making a case for new ideas I believe should be put into practice, I never hesitate to speak my mind or effectively advertise any projects.

Experience

My Green Age: Rewilding by SCRAMP

Co-Writer, Co-Artist

Worked in a team of six - including myself - known as SCRAMP. Our second game together after creating The Offering the prior semester, and our collective Senior year project for Game Design BFA students known as Capstone. In a little over nine months we took initial concepts on the theme of human interaction with nature and transformed it into a 3D vertical slice.

2018 - 2019
The Offering by SCRAMP

Co-Writer, Co-Artist, Lead Ui/Ux Designer

A visual novel originally created as a 10 minute final project for a Game Development class. Evolved into a 3 month project in order to present the game at an in-house event. Worked in the largest game design group at the time with a total of six people. Named our group SCRAMP as an acronym of our names.

2015-2016
Elàn Literary Magazine

Senior Art Editor

Served as Lead Art Editor of Elàn in my senior year of high school at Douglas Anderson School of the Arts, in which I organized and made final decisions on the art pieces that would be displayed in the magazine. I also directed where said pieces would be placed so that they would be partnered with a matching short story or poem that accented them.

2015
Douglas Anderson School of the Arts

Co-Director of Coffee House

Was co-director of the annual showcase, Coffee House, run by the Creative Writing Elàn staff. Coffee House is an all-arts-included event where individuals enter tryouts for the chance to perform on stage. With the help of my co-lead, I decided what whose performances made it past tryouts and what order they'd perform in. I also had input on set design and lead practice meetups.
